With Nevada’s 150th birthday celebration in full gear, the Nevada State Museum in Carson City is offering interested volunteers a chance to make friends, learn history and become part of the party. Tour guide training begins at the museum Tuesday, Sept. 16 at 9 a.m.

No experience is necessary but volunteers are asked to be available at least four hours per month and bring curiosity and enthusiasm for Nevada’s rich cultural and natural heritage.

The 2014 fall volunteer tour guide training brings people together for four days of fun-filled learning, with a feature on the explorer, John C. Frémont, known as The Pathfinder. Training is Tuesday and Wednesday, Sept. 16-17 and 23-24. Each session is from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at 600 N. Carson Street, Carson City.

Volunteers will train to give tours for school-aged children and adults, and they will get instruction on the exhibit, “Finding Frémont: Pathfinder of the West,” celebrating the state’s sesquicentennial.

Training and materials are free. Volunteers are asked to bring something to share for potlucks on the training Tuesdays, where volunteers say they have made great friends over the years.
Sessions will feature Nevada and Great Basin history, with hands-on training. Presenters include museum curators Bob Nylen, Gene Hattori, and George Baumgardner, with a special presentation on the Lincoln Highway. The program also includes sessions on the U.S. Mint, fossils and reptiles.

For information or to sign up, contact Deborah Stevenson at dstevenson@nevadaculture.org or (775) 687-4810, ext. 237 by Sept. 12.
